================================================================================================================================================== 7-220-2022 Mary/Molly Week 4 EXAMs
Here’s our first practice run through the first part of the exam for week 4. It was a little warm and Molly is in full blown heat so it was interesting to say the least.
Before we headed home, Kim helped me with the approach by a stranger.
Yay! Hopefully another week down. Although it is not perfect, I felt pretty good about where she is at. We have worked quite a bit on the left turn with her forging ahead. She is getting better but still needs more work. Her recall is so much better than when we started at the first of the week. There were a couple times when we first started that she looked at me when I said come,
and just sat there like “and what if I don’t” she soon figured out it wasn’t an option to not come. Yay for the leash that was connected to her. While she was with me to work last week I had her do a sit stay while I had students walk by her. I knew she would move but to my surprise she didn’t. (Progress). While in the classroom I worked on approach by a stranger. As I told Jessi on Wednesday I knew I would have to step back and give her a correction for either moving or growling out of fear. To my surprise not once did she need a correction. It was perfect because the day I took her I had a substitute that she has never met help me with the stranger part. So that worked wonderful. The one part I’m not clear on is the correction on the down. I usually practice it on an elevated surface which she does better. But lower to the ground she was a little unsure that she needed to say down until released. I will continue to work on that before class on Monday. Over all I felt like it was a successful week. Please give feedback as to what you see I need to work on. =========================================================================
Hi Gals! I'm done with the first two tests and will be doing the third tonight. I'm posting as I go in case I need to re-do either of them, I'll hopefully have time after church tomorrow. On this test a few turns were off screen, but they were hopefully all also completed on screen. I used the negative space board instead of Gayle's super cute place board to avoid getting it dirty in the mud.
This is the second of three videos. Recall to SSIF. As Roxanne and Mary will vouch, it took me a number of tries to override my automatic left foot lead. Whew!
The third... approach by stranger, will be done tonight and posted either late tonight or first thing tomorrow.
This was my favorite exercise, super easy for her. Ironic, since it was the one I was most concerned about last week. Amazing how quickly both of our attitudes are changing!
Nailed by the third video. The first attempt, my friend jumped the gun, the second one she broke to move toward him (friendly, while muzzled), the third time without the muzzle, she stayed put and let him come through calmly.
She is such a smart girl!!
=========================================================================I did print out an instruction sheet AND had a bowl of candy for people to sample from after they helped us. First my husband called me a creeper because of it, then my boys called me a creeper because of it. 🤣 I also have the worst luck picking locations. Friday night three girls helped me with Niko, but this morning when we went back to a park to try again and record the exam, the only helpers I had were my boys. They even tried to recruit other people but did not have much success-- maybe people are afraid of her? (At least everyone except the little old ladies at Tractor Supply.)
We went back in the evening without the boys to try and get the first part of the exam. I did two takes with some training and a small quiet time in the middle. The first one was probably my best take, in spite of me almost falling on Niko while trying to correct her for jumping in my face. If I had been working with a different dog it may not have gone as well, but my puppy handled it okay.
Here is the second video- even though it was my boys instead of a true stranger, I thought she did pretty well. We tried at least once with each boy (they all wanted candy).
Even though I had to reschedule for Wednesday this week, I figured this would be the best time to upload my attempts. If there are some things i can work on at the first part of next week (extending stay times, etc), I can work on those until our lesson Wednesday so we don't have to cram a week's worth of learning into four days.
It will also give me some time to improve on what we are learning, already.
Have a great Sunday, Everybody!
Update: Here’s this handler actually shaping the down. 🙋♀️🤦♀️ Hopefully the right way, this time! 😂
Fascinating, right?
